Victorian Chaise Longue

We were commissioned to restore this chaise to its original status. We found that the original horsehair had been removed from the piece and replaced with an inferior Coconut fibre filling. The buttoning had all been removed for ease of reupholstery and the cheapest of webbings and hessians had been used underneath.  Even the brass castors had been changed for modern easy-roll types. So all and told, a very inferior job.

So we set to and restored it to its former glory. We rebuilt it using the best Black & white webbing, 15oz Tarpaulin hessian over the springs, Long Tail horsehair filling , all stitched in under 12oz hessian for lasting strength and durability. Then over the stitching, we used more horsehair, 100% lambswool felts and denim calico. Between the calico and the final velvet we used a wool barrier cloth to protect the velvet. We re-designed the buttoning pattern in the scroll back and side arm panel. Now the couch is good for use until at least 2124.
